I never closed this year’s blog series and that was partially by intent, partially some weird carnival jumbie that has been filling the air. But it was not a mistake.
As I mentioned earlier, contrary to common assumption, the majority of carnival bands – both adult and children – are small. Godmother’s International is a 3-year-old children’s band by some super duper godmothers from La-Brea. This year they presented BLUE – inspired by Austin “Super Blue” Lyons, with three sections – Blue Gardenia, Stewards of the Sea, and Fantastic Friday. Blue’s masqueraders are usually tiny tots to primary school and the band has a family vibe.
The mas was locally made, used recycled materials where possible, and although they went to the National Carnival Commission parade in Port-of-Spain, they made a commitment to participating in events in southern Trinidad. Look out for Godmothers International next year.
