Female Masqueraders and band leaders from Trinidad & Tobago Carnival

Come join us on Saturday April 17, 2010 for a photo exhibit of female masqueraders and band leaders from Trinidad Carnival. This event started as a project for Support Women Artists Now (SWAN) Day 2010. I travelled to Trinidad for the annual carnival celebration and interviewed a few of the queens of carnival, a coupl female children’s band leaders and took photographs as I usually do. I wanted to find out more about these women’s journey into mas. I found what I hope to be the beginning of a longer more in depth project looking at what drives people to participate in this annual national tradition. I was inspired by what I heard, and pleased to know that I got to chat with Rosemarie Kuru Jaggesar, the 2010 Queen of Carnival, and mas women greats like Anra Bobb – 8 time Queen of Carnival and winner of multiple competitions. Join us at Emergence Community Arts Collective: 733 Euclid St. NW, Washington DC, 20001 on Saturday April 17, 2010 from 5 – 9 pm for a photographic glimse at Mas Women, and women behind mas in Trinidad. The event is free to all, and there will be photos on sale. http://maswomen.eventbrite.com/
